Founded in 1991 and led by CEO and founder Debbie Bestwick, Team17 is a video games developer and publisher which creates and sells a range of titles through major digital distributors such as Apple, Google, Microsoft and Sony. It also develops and publishes entertainment software for a range of digital download platforms including Apple's App-Store (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch), Sony PlayStation Network (PS4, PS3, PS Vita, PSP), Xbox LIVE (Xbox One, Xbox360) and other social media platforms such as Facebook. The business also works closely with third party developers to help bring their products to market. The company is best known for its Alien Breed video game series and the Worms franchise.
As a part of the transaction, the company also acquired Mouldy Toof Studios, developer behind the popular prison-break game, The Escapists. The acquisition marks the continued diversification of Team17’s games portfolio. The company plans to drive its growth through similar product partnerships and strategic acquisitions. The Escapist was released last year and generated approximately £14.0mn (€16.5mn).
Headquartered in Wakefield (UK) and Nottingham (UK), the company generated revenues of £10.3mn (€12.1mn) for FY2015. It is preparing for the launch of games including Playtonic's Yooka-Laylee and Steamroller Studios' Deadwood: The Forgotten Curse. The company has released over 70 games so far across varied gaming platforms, reporting sales volume of over 65.0mn units.
According to LDC, the global digital gaming industry is currently estimated to be worth $50.0bn (€44.4bn) and growth in the industry continues to be driven by developments in technology, release of new consoles and increased consumer demand. According to Juniper Research, mobile and tablet gaming industry market share would reach 35.0% by 2020.
The company’s key competitors fall into two areas generally – post-dotcom mobile gaming unicorns and legacy PC/console gaming houses that have successfully managed to maintain markets. Competitor’s include Activison Publishing, founded in 1979, a US-based video game publishing giant, known for its games, Ghostbusters and Mutant Ninja Turtles; KIXEYE, a US-based online gaming firm that develops strategies and combat games; Infinity Ward, a US-based video game developer, known for its game Call of Duty and other instalments of the series; Niantic Labs, a US-based game developer spun out of Google, widely popular for Pokemon Go and Ingress; NYX Interactive (TSX: NYX), a US-based company engaged in the design, development, manufacture and distribution of digital gaming solutions; Rockstar Games, founded in 1998 a multinational video game developer and publisher and Supercell, a Finland-based mobile game developer, popularly known for its game the Clash of Clans.
